I've built a place that's comfortable and relaxing yet state-of-the-art technically. It's hard to make beautiful music in ugly surroundings.

About

About Mark

Mark Thies started down the path of the recording engineer in 1982 as a budding bass player and songwriter. A Tascam four-track cassette recorder soon felt too confining, and the upgrades came quickly: an eight-track reel-to-reel, a 12-track beta machine, then a rack of DA-88 digital recorders.

His own music came first, but people soon heard what he was producing in his basement studio and started asking for help with their projects. After five years of working full-time as a printing manager and moonlighting as a musician and recordist, Mark made music his full-time work in 1996.

He enrolled in the recording program at UMKC, where he was asked on several occasions to lecture the class on digital audio. Everything was moving from tape to computer at the time, and Mark was an early adopter of Cakewalk software. As the business and his family grew, he built a 2,000-square-foot studio onto the back of his home in Roeland Park. The new facility opened in spring 2005.

A musician as the lead engineer is a beneficial thing for your next project.
